Convert .docx files into editable templates/documents

Turn an uploaded Word file into a fully editable PandaDoc document or template.

Updated this week

Availability: Starter, Business, and Enterprise plans

When you upload a .docx or .doc file to PandaDoc, you can convert it into a fully editable document — so you can edit content, redesign layouts, add variables, and more.

Account owners can enable this feature in the Extensions.

Formats you can import: .docx and .doc.

Expand to learn more about limitations

  1. From .docx or .doc files, we can import the following fonts only: Arial, Helvetica, Georgia, Times New Roman, and Monospace.

  2. Text Effects and Typography cannot be imported.

  3. Line spacing of your .docx file will be set to the default PandaDoc.

  4. Only simple tables with simple borders can be imported (no design, no merged cells).

  5. Shapes, Charts, and SmartArt are not supported.

  6. Orientation will be set to portrait.

  7. Page color, border, and margins cannot be imported; ‘US letter’ paper size will be applied.

  8. Document comments and footnotes will not be imported.

  9. Only simple number lists (with numbers, letters, without text between clauses) are supported.

  10. The table of contents will not be converted (you will need to add it by using the Table of contents block in PandaDoc).

Upload and convert your file

Note: We're rolling out an updated upload experience. Starting April 20, 2026, some accounts will see the new behavior described below. If you're still seeing the old "Make it editable" prompt on upload, your account hasn't received the update yet — the steps below will still apply once it does.

Click on Create new button, then click on Local file in the pop-up window on the left, or simply drag and drop a file from your device.

Your .docx file uploads as a static (uneditable) document by default.

To make it editable, open the document and click on it's content. A banner appears asking if you'd like to convert this Word document to editable format. Select Make editable.

Warning: PandaDoc doesn’t support importing documents from OneDrive for Business. Files uploaded from Dropbox, OneDrive, or Box will be uneditable.

Review your content

Your template/document will be broken down into content blocks that you can edit.

You can add variables as placeholders for dynamic content (any info that will change from document to document).

You can also modify the design of your document or template.
