Edit with Microsoft Word

Use Microsoft Word for the web to edit .doc or .docx files uploaded to PandaDoc — without conversion and without leaving your browser.

Availability: Starter, Business, and Enterprise plans

When you upload a .doc or .docx file to PandaDoc, the document stays in its original format and opens in a read-only view by default. To edit the text, you launch Microsoft Word for the web directly from PandaDoc. Any changes you make in Word sync back to your PandaDoc document automatically when you close the editing session.

Note: This feature is currently in early access.

Before you start

  • You must have an active Microsoft 365 for the web license.

  • This integration works best with .doc and .docx files. Excel and PowerPoint files can also be opened for editing online, but the experience may be less polished.

  • PandaDoc fillable fields (signature blocks, text fields, etc.) are not visible in the document and cannot be added, moved, or edited inside Microsoft Word in this version.

How to edit a document in Microsoft Word for the web

  1. Open your document in PandaDoc.

  2. Click on its content to see the pop-up appear. Select Edit in Word on the pop-up to open MS Word in a new tab with your document.

  3. Alternatively, select File on the top menu. From there, select Make document editable > Edit in Word.

  4. Microsoft Word for the web opens in a new browser tab.
Note: While the editing session is active, PandaDoc locks the document.

  5. Make your changes in Microsoft Word. The document saves automatically as you type. You can also press Cmd+S (Mac) or Ctrl+S (Windows) to save manually.

  6. When you're done, close the Microsoft Word tab or switch from editing mode to viewing mode in Word.

  7. PandaDoc detects the closed session, syncs your changes, and unlocks the document.

Working with multi-document bundles

If your PandaDoc document contains more than one .docx file, you'll be asked which document you want to edit when you select Edit in Word from the top File menu.

Alternatively, you can launch the editor by clicking on the content of the document you want to modify and selecting Edit in Word from the pop-up at the bottom of the page.

Co-authoring

Multiple users can edit the same document in the same Microsoft Word session.

When a colleague opens a document that's already being edited in Word, they'll see a banner in PandaDoc indicating the session is active. When they select Open tab with active session, they're invited into the same Word session and can edit simultaneously.

Changes made by any participant are saved and synced back to PandaDoc when the last active user closes the session.

Version history

PandaDoc keeps your original .docx file intact. Every time you edit in Microsoft Word and close the session, the updated version is saved. You can view version history and restore a previous version from the document settings.

Known limitations

  • Fillable fields: PandaDoc fields (signatures, text inputs, etc.) are invisible in Microsoft Word and cannot be added, repositioned, or deleted in this version.

  • No PandaDoc editing while Word session is open: The PandaDoc editor is locked during an active Word session. Close the Word tab to unlock it.

  • Page flow differences: Because Microsoft Word uses a flow-based layout, page breaks may appear in different positions in Word's editor compared to PandaDoc. The final exported PDF uses PandaDoc's rendering as the source of truth.

  • Microsoft 365 Subscription: This version utilizes a free tier of Microsoft 365; logging in with your own Microsoft account for editing is not supported.

Data Privacy

When opening Microsoft 365 for editing, the document is temporarily sent to Microsoft 365 services for processing. For more information about data privacy, please refer to our Privacy Notice.
