Working with numbered lists

Continue lists by typing the next number, even across pages. Configure numbering for different heading styles in the Design tab.

Note: When you want to continue your numbered list on a new page or if it’s separated by another block, simply start typing the next number followed by a dot and press Enter or Space on your keyboard.

Note: When you import a .docx file that has numbered lists, the numbering will be preserved automatically.

Limitations

  • Multi-level lists. Lists with more than one level, such as 1.1 or 1.1.1, are not supported. Only first-level numbering is supported.

  • Number formats. Only integer formats (e.g., 1., 2., 3.) are supported. Letter formats (e.g., a., b., c.) are not supported.

  • Copy-pasting content.

  • Correct numbering will not be preserved when copying and pasting content within tables

  • Content library items and Smart content. Correct numbering will not be preserved when you insert a content library item and when using smart content blocks.

While there are a few limitations, we suggest a workaround that might overcome some of these issues.

You can use auto numbering in headings and apply it across different pages by following these steps:

  1. Select your text and change it in the top panel from Normal to Heading. You can choose any type of heading that suits your needs. For example, select Heading 2.

  2. Repeat this process for text on a different page.

  3. Next, navigate to the Design tab on the right, scroll down to Typography, then select Headings.

  4. Find the heading type you've chosen – for example, Heading 2.

  5. Find Auto-numbering, then select the auto-numbering style from the dropdown.

You’re all set! If you add headings to different pages, the numbering will be saved.

If you need to create a multi-level list, follow these steps:

  1. Select your text and change it in the top panel from Normal to Heading. For example, select Heading 1 for the first point and Heading 2 for the subparagraph.

  2. Repeat this process for text on a different page.

  3. Next, navigate to the Design tab on the right, scroll down to Typography, then select Headings.

  4. Find Heading 1 > Auto-numbering, then select the auto-numbering style from the dropdown.

  5. Finally, navigate to the Heading 2 > Auto-numbering and select the auto-numbering style from the dropdown. Make sure it’s the same as you selected for Heading 1.

You can now create multi-level lists on different pages.

To make sure your headings look like regular text, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Design tab on the right, scroll down to Typography, then select Headings.

  2. Find the heading type you've chosen – for example, Heading 5.

  3. Change the font size and color to match your text.
